This system is a new instrument and technology for simultaneous real-time monitoring of free behavior and specific types of cytosolic fluorescence signals (calcium signals) in the whole cortex of animals. The technology allows real-time monitoring of cortical fluorescence signals through the skull by excitation of fluorescent molecules or proteins (e.g., GCamp7s) in subcranial cortical cells by means of excitation light, without opening the skull. The instrument can be combined with a fiber-optic recording system for simultaneous imaging of one or more deep nuclei and cortical mesoscopic fluorescence, or with a later version for optogenetic integration. It is a known means of mesoscopic imaging with high temporal resolution, which is of great significance for neural decoding at the mesoscopic level in the context of free movement.
